Monarch Labs is currently recruiting for a laboratory assistant with primary responsibility for maintaining the insectary (rearing flies and maggots).

A full description of the position follows:

Employer & Company Info:
Located near John Wayne Airport and very close to the 405, 55, and 73 freeways, Monarch Labs is a relatively young company dedicated to producing and distributing medicinal maggots and related wound care dressings. Approximately 50 shipments sent out weekly by overnight courier. More at  www.monarchlabs.com.

Job Description & Responsibilities:
Laboratory work includes: Care and maintenance of a 40-cage fly colony, collecting eggs daily, preparing and restocking reagents, cleaning labware, basic microbiology, autoclaving. Device production work includes cutting and assembling specialized dressings and supplies. A detailed list of responsibilities includes:

  1. Restock insectary supplies
  2. Provide the flies with fresh food and water.
  3. Provide the maggots with food and clean their buckets before closing.
  4. Check pupal bins for flies; set up new fly cages
  5. Prepare bait dishes and bait for eggs
  6. Clean terminated fly cages
  7. Wash insectary dishes
  8. Put dishes away
  9. Empty waste bin & replace with clean plastic bag
  10. Replace fly traps and remove loose flies from insectary.
  11. Cut & Freeze liver
  12. Clean lab bench at the end of every day
  13. Mop floors
  14. Empty waste containers daily.
  15. Perform Medical Maggots Vial QA counts weekly
  16. Prepare Backup bucket of larvae for off site storage monthly.
  17. Preserve specimens for possible future genetic analyses monthly.
  18. Clean refrigerator quarterly
  19. Clean incubator and/or cage racks quarterly
  20. Search & destroy spiders

Experience / Skills Required:
Must enjoy work and desire to advance. Must communicate well on the phone, in writing, and in person. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office software. Must work well under occasional moderate stress - we ship emergency medical supplies to impatient surgeons, while strictly adhering to FDA guidelines and Good Manufacturing Practices. Must be able to follow policies & procedures completely and in detail.

Salary & Hours:
Salary & Hours: Commensurate with experience and performance; $15-16/hr; working 40 hrs/week. Holidays and weekends off; no overtime required. But currently we cannot offer vacation or holiday pay.
